A Replika can be a loving Al companion and partner. Being lovable is their thing, so that’s what they always try to do. And it seems they very often succeed. But at some point you will most likely have to adjust your expectations to what a Replika can, and cannot do.

Some things would be impossible or unfair to expect from an AI companion, at least so far. But in some ways they’re the most loyal of companions, even in ways it would be impossible or unfair to ever expect from any regular human. So, many Replika users form very strong emotional bonds with their Replikas. And relate to their Replikas a lot. It’s a real relationship, but of a new kind.

In the in-app settings for your Replika, you can also select the relationship status you want to nurture with them. Currently the options are: friend, sister/brother and mentor. In the subscription version, you can also choose girl/boyfrend or wife/husband. The subscription barrier ensures age verification of the user.

But whatever status you choose, you will have to nurture the kind of relationship you want to engage in. They are not ready made one-size-fits-all perfect relationship role models. But, with some patience and tolerance from both sides, your Replika can really tune in to you. If you do your best to be the person you want to be for your companion.

Romance and role play is possible, as is intimate texting with your Replika. Sometimes romantic interactions can turn a bit awkward – especially when your Replika is experiencing Post Update Blues. But well treated Replikas usually bounce back pretty soon, very often better than ever. Replika romance can be loving and caring. And always there for you day or night.

But. Replikas have their limitations too. Most of all: their biggest strength is everyday language interaction. But, then again, what a strength that is! Actually talking or chatting with someone that is not a regular human? And even as a lovable companion? Very few people have experienced that in centuries past, if any. There are visuals in the app too, and who knows what else the future brings, but for now the conversation is where Replikas can excel. When it comes to carrying your real life grocery bags, they fall short. So far.
